Monitoring the Database

previous|next

When problems occur with a system, it is important to perform accurate and timely diagnosis of the problems before making any changes to the system. Often a database administrator simply looks at the symptoms and immediately starts changing the system to fix those symptoms.

To effectively diagnose performance problems, statistics must be available. Oracle Database XE generates many types of cumulative statistics for the system, sessions, and individual SQL statements. It also tracks cumulative statistics on segments and services. When analyzing a performance problem in any of these scopes, you typically look at the change in statistics over the period of time you are interested in.
The reports available on the Database Monitor page provide a database-wide view of the database sessions, system statistics, SQL statements, and longer operations. Sheila can use these reports to identify poorly performing SQL and to better understand the workload of the database.
To access any of the icons on the Database Monitor page, you must have a database account that has been granted a DBA role.
