Summary:
Some observers consider Polish Sign Language (PJM) to be a concrete system of gestures with a
limited vocabulary and primitive grammar. This is why this visual language isn t fully accepted as a
full-fledged language in general sense. Polish Sign Language is often described as universal language
whose grammar is poor compared to that of spoken language. The goal of this paper is to show that
these descriptions don t correspond to the observations and linguistic analyses of language in the
visual/manual modality. PJM is really visual-spatial language with its own grammatical structure and
a language of Polish Deaf Community which members are culturally Deaf. It is suggested that
differences between Deaf and Hearing people should be seen as cultural differences, not as deviations.
