The Swedish National Heritage Federation is the
national organisation for a mass movement with nearly
half a million members belonging to 1,800 Local Heritage
Societies. These societies concern themselves, on a
non-profit, unpaid basis with the local heritage in its
very broadest sense. The Local Heritage Societies have
their natural place in the social economy. Work relating
to the cultural heritage and its preservation also
includes issues relating to the survival of the local
community.
Unless initiatives and responsibility are taken, for
example, with regard to caring services and schools,
infrastructure and other local government planning and
activities, the local heritage is also threatened.
Knowledge of local history generates security and
imparts identity to the local community, which in turn
is the foundation of present and future development.
Most Local Heritage Societies have guided tours of
local heritage centres and museums and many of them run
cafés. A large number of societies can also offer
overnight accommodation in chalets and rooms and a wide
spectrum of guided tours and other tourist activities.
Traditional events such as Midsummer festivals and
Christmas markets are frequently arranged by a Local
Heritage Society.
Local Heritage Societies work to preserve existing
local amenities and some even run libraries, ticket
agencies and postal services under their own aegis. The
societies can bring pressure to bear for the provision
of a new bus service to and from a village or hamlet.
Through voluntary work and the brokering of contacts,
they also help to facilitate entrepreneurial start-ups.
The Local Heritage Societies work to mobilise public
opinion and are officially consulted at local government
level. Local authorities also co-operate with Local
Heritage Societies and other local organisations for the
realisation of projects and schemes of the future, such
as adult education programmes, business development
centres and cultural events and projects.
Through all these various initiatives, the local
heritage movement is helping to develop the social
economy. It is doing so more and more in partnership
with other organisations sharing the same objective
a
positive development of their own local community.
