What is Kava?
Kava is a relaxing natural beverage that is made from the root
of Piper methysticum, a species of pepper. It is cultivated
throughout the South Pacific and as far north to Hawaii, it
thrives in tropical to sub-tropical climates.
Pacific Islanders have used it for over 3,000 years. It is also
known as Kava Kava, 'awa-ava, Yagona and many other names!
What are the benefits of Kava?
Kava has the ability to relax the body while promoting mental
clarity making it a natural choice for the relief of stress and
anxiety. Kava's analgesic properties are sometimes effective in the
relief of pain. Kava has also been used to treat insomnia, phobias,
sore muscles, PMS, and menopausal symptoms, edginess when quitting
smoking. It is a safe, natural, non-addictive alternative to some
prescription drugs.
The drinking of cold water infusions of Kava has been part of the
Polynesian life and culture for centuries. It can effectively reduce
stress and anxiety. It evokes an atmosphere of euphoria. Just one cup
(4-6 ounces) promotes a relaxed warm feeling that melts away the day's
feelings of frustration, anxiety and stress.
How to prepare:
Polynesians prepare the drink with cold water. I like to use cold
Fruit Juice like Pineapple or Passion Orange. You can substitute
\juice for water or a little of both. Use about a teaspoon of
Kava to about 6 oz of water, adjust to your own taste.
Hints - put the powder in a piece of cheesecloth (or clean pantyhose
or even a sock!) and knead it in a small bowl of water. The longer
you knead the stronger it will be. When the liquid squeezed out becomes
clear (a couple of minutes), it is ready!
It may take a few cups to "acquire" a taste for it, kind of like Ginseng.
WARNING: Polynesians regularly get "drunk" on Kava, although there is no
alcohol. It will numb your gums and tongue and give you a feeling of euphoria.
