Muscle Testing (T-0083)
Quadratus Lumborum

Patient position:
Prone, with no external stabilization required.
Place the lower extremity in slight extension
and abduction to correspond with the line of
fibers of the muscle. Elevate the pelvis
laterally.
Examiner pressure:
Resistance is given by applying traction on
the lower extremity, directly opposing the line
of pull of the quadratus lumborum. If the hip
muscles are weak, apply pressure to the
posterolateral iliac crest opposite the line of
pull of the muscle. Because this test does not
satisfactorily differentiate the quadratus
lumborum, record only whether it appears
weak or strong, rather than assigning a
numerical grade.
