rawing practices use by U.S. inustry. The ASME Y14 practices supersee the
American National Stanars Institute ANSI stanars. The ASME Y14

Drawing Template
The founation of a SoliWorks rawing is the Drawing Template. Drawing size,
rawing stanars, company information, manufacturing an or assembly
requirements, units an other properties are efine in the Drawing Template.
The Sheet Format is incorporate into the Drawing Template. The Sheet Format
can contain borer, title block an revision block information, company name an
or logo information, Custom Properties an or SoliWorks Properties.
Create a custom Drawing Template. SoliWorks starts with a efault Drawing
Template. Select the No Sfheet Format. Create a custom Sheet Format from the
efault rawing template.
The efault SoliWorks Stanar Sheet Format is A-Aanscape.
A-Aanscape
Note: The ASME Y14.1-1995 Decimal Inch Drawing Sheet Size an Format an
ASME Y14.1M-1995 Metric Drawing Sheet Size an format stanar efine the
sheet size specification in inch an metric units respectively.
Drawing Size refers to the physical paper size use to create the rawing. The
most common paper size in the U.S. is A size: (8.5in. x 11in.). The most common
paper size internationally is A4 size: (210mm x 297mm).
The ASME Y14.1-1995 an ASME Y14.1M-1995 stanars contain both a
horizontal an vertical format for A an A4 size, respectively.
The corresponing SoliWorks format is Aanscape for horizontal an Portrait for
vertical.
Drawing sizes A through E are preefine in SoliWorks. Drawing sizes F, G, H,
J & K are User Define in the No Sheet Format rop
own list. Metric rawing sizes A4 through A0 are
preefine in SoliWorks. Metric roll paper sizes are
User Define in the No Sheet Format rop own list.

The Drawing Properties Detailing options provie the ability to aress:
imensioning stanars, text style, center marks, witness lines, arrow styles,
tolerance an precision. Drawing Properties are store with the Drawing
Template.
There are numerous text styles an sizes available in SoliWorks. Companies
evelop rawing format stanars an use specific text height for Metric an
English rawings. The ASME Y14.2M-1992(R1998) stanar lists the lettering,
arrowhea an line conventions an lettering conventions for engineering
rawings an relate ocumentation practices. Examples:
" Font: Utilize a single stroke, gothic lettering in all upper case letters. Use a
single font. Century Gothic is the efault SoliWorks font. Create a test page
to insure that both Winows an your particular Printer/Plotter rivers support
the selecte font.
" Minimum letter height will vary epening upon usage on a rawing:
o Minimum letter height use for rawing title, rawing size, CAGE
Coe, rawing number an revision letter positione insie the Title
block is .12in. (3mm) for A, B an C inch sizes an A2, A3 an A4
metric rawing sizes: Text height is .24in. (6mm) for D an E inch
rawing sizes an A0, A1 metric rawing sizes.
o Minimum letter height for Section views, Zone letters an numerals is
.24in. (6mm) for all rawing sizes. Set Text size for Section, Detail
an View font to 6mm.
o Minimum letter height for rawing block heaings is .10in. (2.5mm)
for all rawing sizes.
o Minimum letter height for all other characters is .12in. (3mm) for all
rawing sizes. Set Text size for Dimension an Note Font to 3mm.
" Arrowheas: Utilize soli fille single style arrowhea, with a 3:1 ratio of
arrow length to arrow with. The arrowhea with is proportionate to the line
thickness. The Dimension line thickness is 0.3mm. In this project, the arrow
length is 3mm. Arrow with is 1mm. SoliWorks efines arrow size with
three options: Height, With an Aength. Height correspons to arrow with.
With correspons to arrow length. Aength correspons to the istance from
the tip of the arrow to the en of the tail.
" The Section line thickness is 0.6mm. The arrow length is 6mm. The arrow
with is 2mm.
" Aine Withs: The ASME Y14.2M-1992(R1998) stanar recommens two
line withs with a 2:1 ratio. The minimum with of a thin line is 0.3mm.
The minimum with of a thick, normal line is 0.6mm. Note: A single with
PAGE 1 15
Drawing Template and Sheet Format Drawing and Detailing with SolidWorks 2001/2001Plus
line is acceptable on CAD rawings. Two line withs are use in this Project;
Thin: 0.3mm an Normal: 0.6mm. Apply Aine Styles in the Aine Font
Document Properties. Aine Font etermines the appearance of a line in the
Graphics winow. SoliWorks styles utilize in this Project are as follows:
SolidWorks Thin (0.3mm) Normal (0.6mm)
Line Style
Solid
Dashed
Phantom
Chain

Thin/Thick Chain
Various printers/plotters allow variable Aine Weight settings. Example: Thin
(0.3mm), Normal (0.6mm) an Thick (0.6mm). Refer the printer/plotter owner s
manual for Aine Weight setting.
Aine Font: The ASME Y14.2M-1992(R1998) stanar aress the type an style
