The rich colors of Kate Fowle Meleney s bead reminded

me of Chinese red lacquer, so I designed a beaded bead

based on hexagonal forms found in Chinese beadwork.

of eight beaded beads.
Assembly
[1] Cut a 22-in. (56 cm) piece of bead-
ing wire, and string the focal bead.
[2] On one side, string a 3 mm onyx

bead, a 4 mm spacer, and a 3 mm onyx
(photo b).
[3] String a beaded bead, a 3 mm onyx,
a spacer, a pinch bead, a spacer, and a
3 mm onyx (photo c). Repeat twice.
[4] String a 6 mm fire-polished bead,
a 3 mm onyx, a spacer, a pinch bead,
a spacer, and a 3 mm onyx. Repeat,
but omit the second 3 mm onyx.
[5] On the other side of the focal,
repeat steps 2 and 3, then repeat the
pattern strung in step 3 two more times.
Repeat step 4, but string the pattern
four times instead of twice.
[6] Test the fit of the necklace, and add
or remove beads as needed.
[7] On one end, string a crimp bead
and half of the clasp. If you wish, string
approximately seven 150s to act as a
buffer between the wire and the clasp.
Go back through the crimp bead and
a few more beads (photo d). Crimp the
crimp bead (Online Basics), and trim
the excess wire. Repeat on the other
end, then use chainnose pliers to close
a crimp cover over each crimp. w
