Emission Afterburning

Air pump

If your Volkswagen is a Station Wagon, Campmobile or Kombi, a special air pump delivers fresh air to the engine exhaust ports. The additional air is used to “afterburn” the harmful emissions as they leave the combustion chambers. Through this method cleaner exhaust reaches the outside air.

When taking the foot off the accelerator while shifting into another gear, the air pump also supplies fresh air to the intake manifold. The additional air contributes to a morę complete combustion of the air/fuel mixture.

A valve Controls the necessary supply of fresh air to the exhaust ports and the intake manifold.
