(1) Om should only be used with te and an infinitive with the meaning 'in order to'. Hij werkt hard om zijn brood te verdienen: He works hard in order to earn a living. In conversation om is often used incorrectly. Hij vroeg ons (om) hier te blijven: He asked us to stay here. When om is included it actually means: He asked us in order to stay here! Sentence 2 illustrates this error.
