in 1981 the rock band U2 wrote a song called ‘New Year's Day‘. It was inspired by Lech Wałęsa and the Solidarity movement, who were struggling to free Poland from communism. Twenty-five years later U2 performed the song in front of a crowd of 70,000 fans at a concert in the Southern Polish city of Chorzow.

It was a marvellous moment - typical of a U2 live performance. After the first four songs, the crowd were cheering, waiting for the start of the fifth. Adam Clayton, the bassist was standing on the left. On the opposite side of the stage, guitarist 'The Edge' was waiting. Then he started to play the first notes of 'New Year's Day’. Suddenly all the fans on the pilch raised red shirts, flags and scaryes into the air, and those in the grandstands waved white pieces of cloth. The stadium became an enormous Polish flag.

Nobody was morę surprised than the singer. Bono, but he immediately understood the crowd's actions and was yisibly moved. He took off his jacket, turned it inside out and put it back on, revealing the red lining inside. He then walked to the front of the stage and bowed to the audience as an acknowlegdement of their creativity.

As Willie Williams, U2’s show designer, wrote in his tour diary: Tve never seen an audience do anything like it before. I think my mouth must have fallen open. Who organised this? The fact that it was premeditated madę it all the morę extraordinary; an audience consciously plotting to put on a show for the performers. It was humbling, thrilling....'

The idea of creating the Polish national flag at the start of 'New Year’s Day’ came from the fans in Chorzow, and spread quickly on the Internet and in the local media in the days before the concert. Corning just days after Live 8, it was a moving reminder that ordinary people really can change history.
