The buming of a log in a fireplace and the buming of gasoline in the engine of a car are examples of combustion reactions. In a combustion reaction, oxygen is required and often the reaction produces an oxide, water, and heat. For example, methane gas (CH4) reacts with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water. The heat produced by this combustion reaction cooks our food and heats our homes.

Combustion reactions also occur in the cells of the body in order to metab-olize food, which provides energy for the activities we want to do. We absorb oxygen (02) from the air to bum glucose (CóH^Og) from our food, and even-tually our cells produce C02, H20, and energy.
