Prawdopodobnie za brązowe umbo uznać wypadnie dwa guzy z Cząstkowa-^ winią buda. pow. Kościerzyna. 0 158 i 132 mm. wypukłe i spłaszczone na krawędzi, zaopatrzone w nit z wypukłą główką³⁰ oraz okazy z Buczka Małego, pow. Złotów*¹. Być może za okucia tarcz służyły też owalne i prostokątne blaszki żelazne, odkryte w grobie z Piekar Wielkich. pow. Legnica**, i uznawane niekiedy za okucia pasa; w tym ostatnim wypadku jest niewykluczone, że mamy do czynienia ze znaleziskiem si eesnolateńskim.

Jeżeli uwzględnić wspomniane wyżej spostrzeżenia badaczy oraz materiały z obrębu kultury łużyckiej, okaże się bardzo prawdopodobna możliwość poznania i wykorzystania tarcz przez plemiona kultury łużyckiej we wcześniejszym okresie czasu, niż na to wskazuje tarcza z Ognicy oraz ich wyobrażenia na ceramice kultur łużyckiej i wschodniopomorskiej.

Jakkolwiek jest to jeszcze hipoteza robocza, posiada ona jut wiele cech prawdopodobieństwa i w dalszych badaniach nie może być pomijana.

The prezent artide is given to tho discussion of findings of shields and their buta oo vmh1* ln the rangę of Luaatian and East Pomcranian Cultures.

The author presumes that the shields represent the type with urn bo, and thełr ornament is connected with the varlety Ognlca (Kipperwiete). er the generał Herzsprong type.

Images of shields are frcąuently represented on ash-urns of East Pocneraniaa Culture. The first group comprises drawings of shields moetly oval shaped. with • urface ornamented by the herringbone motlvc, by inserted angloą (fig. S: 1—I. 8—11). or concentrlc cirdes (fig. S: 8—4). maybc imłtating the suHhce omamenta-tion. Spedal attentioa łs dae to the drawing of a warrłor mounted on horseback. with shiełd, rcvcalcd In the locality Sochaczcw-Trojanów (West Maneta), bdoo-glng to the phaae of East Pomeranłan Culture spreading then to the south-east. I.e. the period HaD/LA (fig. 5: 29). Less numerous are images of sąuare shields with umbos (fig. 5: 12—15).

Group two ara Imitations of shields with umbos (.jSchildbuckel”) in the form of vcrtical. rorcly horizontai. plastic knobs. from whlch emanate radial lince (fig. 5: 13—20. 22—23) and drawings of herrlng-bone stylized motives (fig. 5: 21. 23. 24).

The last group contains stylized multiradiał figurę*. recognized to be symbols of shields (fig. 25—28).

Nearly all the mentioned images of shields or their symbols appeared ca the dnerary urns on thełr left side or behlnd. which would mean their placing on the sidc where shields mostly used to be worn. Several images (fig. 5: 7 and 20) pro-bably represent shields to bc carried or hung by leather strap* In many cases was their likeness accompanled by narration scenes, displaying armed horsemen and drawings of wcapons, particularly spears.

The author indicates the possibility of connecting the Idea of narrative Images on vcssels from the l!aC-HaD period with the Eastalpine aren by means of the am-ber route. He stresses, however, that in the rangę of East Pomeranian Culture they only spread in the limo when trading contacts with Southern countries had dlml-nished and thełr Influence had waekened.

He further draws attention to the chance of link Ing certaln bronie knobs with shields. He particularly considers specimcns having riveta instead of handle*, or when deprivcd of handle* provided only with smali apertures along the rim. se-emlnglr prepared for littlc rivcts. Some groupa of knoha or bosses from the period BD-IIoA were found in the area of the Plllny culture (South Slo-vakla and North Hungary. c.g. Zvolen-Balkftn, fig. 6; Klaćanovo, distr. Mukaczc-wo; Opava-Kotoflnky). The last one mentioned was <Uscovered ln the rangę ot Lu-salian Culture. In the subjccfs literaturo they were considered to be ornament* of horses' harneea or human clothing.
