Book system may be esamined on three Ievels: i. when we take into aćcount thesieps in the communication process by means of such disciplineś as art of editing, bookselling, librarianship, reading; 2. when we lay emphasis on a ćhosen aspect of the communication process, eg flow of Information, book reading (the boundaries between disciplines cannot be maintained then); 3, when we ihvestigate the communication process as a whole (the whole system of book). To this type of publications belong reports concerning book market, being an effect of inter-disciplinazy relations.    '

We shouid pay morę attention to the world tendency of anaiysing trends in book circulation in comparison to other means of communication and their role ia propagaimg books. Eesearches shouid provide the present-day picture of waya of transmitting and recording human thought. The art of book is also a problem whićh shouid be studied, sińce a regress in this field is observed now. The resultś of such studies may help to improve the art of book printing in Poland.

. The article points to the importance of comparative studies which can affect formulating of generał principles of growth. Working of the rules of economy, which has hardly ever been taken into account in Polish librarianship, Shouid be recogniaed, and madę use of in a rational way. One of the means to improve functioning of libraries is to introduce a network co-operation in gathering books, this system has already been put into practice in many countries.

The role of historical studies is also underlined, sińce a historical perspective attows to estimzte morę tborougbly .some current problems. An important task for-historians of books is to look at Polish books in an objective way, without uncritical praising. Historians examining books shouid constantly erurich their knowledge, familiarizmg themselves with source materials, comparative, descriptive and encjrlopaedicpublications.

Istotną cechą współczesnych reform oświatowych jest tendencja do Wdrożenia kształcenia się ustawicznego. Jednym z bodźców skłaniających do ciągłego uczenia się jest szybkie tempo rozwoju nauki i techniki, wymagające od ludzi stałej aktualizacji i podwyższania kwalifikacji zawodowych. W tym przypadku w prawidłowo funkcjonującym systemie społeczno-gospodarczym kształcenie się permanentne jest środkiem zdobywania prestiżu materialnego i społecznego, a przynajmniej winno zapobiegać stresom związanym z groźbą degradacji zawodowej i społecznej w wyniku nienadążania za wymogami życia. Z drugiej strony.— w miarę wzrostu poziomu wykształcenia społeczeństwa coraz więcej ludzi kształci się przez całe życie nie tylko dlatego, że chce więcej mieć, lecz dlatego, że kształcenie się jest dla nich sposobem samorealizacji poprzez rozwijanie zainteresowań i możliwości twórczych, poprzez wielostronny rozwój osobowości, słowem, coraz więcej ludzi uczy się po to; żeby w pełni być człowiekiem.

Pedagodzy przepowiadają rozwój społeczeństwa „edukacyjnego”, w którym kształcenie się będzie wartością autoteliczną. Stanowiłoby ono antytezę społeczeństwa konsumpcyjnego¹. Istotę motywów skłaniających ludzi do ustawicznego kształcenia się lapidarnie ujmuje Bogdan Suchodolski; „Trzeba się uczyć po to, aby lepiej żyć” i „warto żyć dlatego, iż można się uczyć”².    *    ,
