or points. If a shuttle without a hook or point is to be used, a separate, smali crochet-type hook will be neces-sary for joining purposes.

Directions for using a shuttle with a point will be used in this book.

The first step is to wind the light colored thread onto the shuttle, as follows:

Slip the end of the thread coming from the bali through the smali hole in the shank of the shuttle. Take the end around the shank and tie the thread to itself (see ills. A).

Hołd shuttle in left hand with the point on the left side. Wind the thread up around the front of the shank then over and down the back - in a counter-clockwise direc-tion when looking at the point side. The shuttle should not be overfilled, i.e. the thread should never bulge be-yond the edges.

Finish winding with the thread coming out at the end of the shuttle which is away from the point (illus. B). When the shuttle is held in the right hand with the first finger on the point (top) side and thumb on the bottom and looking down on the shuttle the thread should be leaving the shuttle in a counter-clockwise direction. (illus. C).

Cut the light thread from the bali, leaving approximately 10 inches between the shuttle and the cut end.

Tie the end of the dark thread to the end of the shuttle thread, leaving approximately 10 inches between the knot and the shuttle.

Hołd the shuttle between thumb and first finger of right hand with thread going away from your body, as in Illus.

With left hand, hołd the knot (where the two colored threads are tied together) loosely between thumb and first finger of left hand with bali thread hanging down on the palm side and shuttle thread on other side of hand.

Fig. 1

Release thumb holding the knot. Puli on the shuttle thread, guiding the knot in a clockwise direction around back of fin-gers of left hand to palm side then up to where it was previ-ously held.
