7 a 2.13 Remind Ss that we can show interest with what we say (How amazing!) and how we say it (intonation). Ss turn to page 135 and listen to the six exchanges and after each one tell you if the response is interested or not. Establish that when we show interest our intonation is lively. and not fiat. Ask Ss to copy the interested responses.

Ask Ss if they know what an echo is and what an echo Ä™uestion might be (a question we use to show response/interest). Tell them to read


can tell you why the echo question changes in the response (because it matches the auxiliary verb and tense). Ss can work in pairs to practise reading and replying with an echo question.

9    This exercise requires the Ss to use the language morÄ™ freely. If they are not confident, allow them to prepare the dialogues in writing first. Stronger Ss can go on to talk about morÄ™ situations. Ask a few pairs to perform their dialogues in front of the class and praise good intonation.
