I. Forms of LYRIC POETRY - pastorał poetry:

- celebrates idealised rural life,

- first pastorals - Greek poet Theocritus; then genre adapted into Latin by the

Roman poet Virgil (Eclogues),

- among the best examples of English pastorał poetry: Edmund Spenser’s The

Shepherd’s Calendar.

II. Forms of LYRIC POETRY - sonnet:

- origin: 13^th century Italy,

- Italian “sonnet” - “little sound” or “song",

- Italian (Petrarchan) sonnet type:

• lyric poem of 14 lines, divided into an octave (first 8 lines) and a sestet (last 6 lines)

• octave - a story/ problem presented

• sestet - solution given

• rhythmic pattern: iambic pentameter

• rhyming pattern: abba, abba, cde, cde

- English (Shakespearean) sonnet type

• Shakespeare’s Sonnets - masterpieces of poetry,

• lyric poem of 14 lines, divided into 3 quatrains and a couplet,

• rhythmic pattern: iambic pentameter,

• rhyming pattern: abab, cdcd, efef, gg,

• expression of the poet’s personal feelings and attitude to life,

- English (Spenserian) sonnet type

• named after Edmund Spenser (1552-1599).
