EDGINGS

Edgings can be added to garmcnts instead of tibs or added to knitted items like throws (see page 138). They can be knitted separately, worked from the cast-on edge with the main fabric worked up from them or added to an edge by picking up stitches from a finished piece. Knitted edgings can also trim wovcn fabric garmcnts. or used on househoid items. See the stitch library page 125-7 for morę edgings.

Knit Perfect

/ For a smpie dekcate edgng which looks great around cottars. work a p<ot btnd (cast) off (see page 25) or p*ck up and knit sts aloog an edge and then bmd (cast) off.

/ Have a look m antiqoe shops for old garments. tabte Irnen and bed linen.A lot of these will have knitted lace edgings. Wbite cotton lace edgings add a romantic look to ordinary bed linen.

Choose one finom the Stitch library (see page 125-7). Use a yam wrth the same washing instructions as the bed linen. Wash both to make surę they dont shnnk before sewing the edging on. Add edgings around ready-made cushions and throws.

/ Lengths of knitted lace were traditionalły used to decorate sheff edges. Soften the bottom edge of roller blinds by sewing on a p*cot point or fnlled edging.

/ Add the ruffled or fnlled edging to the ends of a płam scarf. Use the same colour yam or a contrasting one.


Ruffled edging worked first

Cast on a number of sts divisibłe by 6 plus 5 dose to the finished number of sts required plus 10 sts for overy 6 sts. For cxample. if 50 is the finished number of sts required. cast on 53 sts (8 x 6 ♦ 5) plus 80 sts (8 x 10).The three extra stitches will be decreased evenly across the first row of the mam fabnc aft er knittmg the ruffle. Row I (WS) K5. * pl I. k5: rep from • to end.

Row 2 P5. * k2tog. k7. ssk. p5: rep from • to end.

Row 3 K5. * p9. k5: rep from • to end.

Row 4 PS. * k2tog, k5. ssk. p5: rep from • to end.

Cont m this way. dec I st at each side of knit sts on every RS row and work 2 purl sts less m each repeat on every WS row until 3 knit sts remam for each ruffle. end mg wrth a WS row.

Next row P5. • sl2tog kl -psso. p5; rep from • to end.

Next row K5. * p I. k5: rep from • to end.

Cont m mam fabnc. dcc 3 sts cvenly for required number of sts on first row.

Ruffled edging worked at the end

Work before bmdmg (casting) off the stitches of mam piece or pick up and knit stitches aloog the edge of the mam piece (see page 68). A mukiple of 6 stitches plus S »s required so mcrease stitches to get patt rep.The Ml stitches are madę to the nght and left (see page 27).

Cont m this way. mc I st at each side of k sts on RS rows and work the extras sts as p sts on WS rows until there are 11 knit sts for each ruffle. endmg with a WS row. Bind (cast) off loosely m patt.
