This is in reply to your letter of 18 August following on from our telephone conversat»on of the same day.

As I hope I madę elear, such a hypothetical situation requires a somewhat vague reply. I do apologise if that is the case here, but perhaps with morę information, we would be able to provide a morę precise assessment.

Within the limitations of that caveat, if you come to possess a published document, and if morę than 75 years has passed sińce the death of the document’s author, then the documents contents have passed into the public domain. You do not own the cop>Tight on the contents of the document. No one can. However, if, as you say, you were to possess the only existing copy of the document, then certain conditions pertain.
