| INCREASING STITCHES

Increasing one stitch (inc i)

The easiest way to increase one stitch is to work into the front and back of the same stitch. This produces a smali bar across the second (increase) stitch and is very visib!e.This makes counting the increases easier.

This simple beret comos in threc sizes. smali, medium and large and is knitted in stockinctte (stocking) stitch with a kl.pl rib border.

To shape knitting, stitches are increased or decreased. Increases are uscd to make a piece of knitting wider by adding morę stitches, either on the ends of rows or within the knitting. Some increases are workcd to be invisible whilst others are meant to be seen and are known as decorative increases. You can increase one stitch at a time or two or morę.

FULL FASHIONING

To make a neater edge when working increases at the beginning and end of rows. work the increase stitches a few stitches from the end. This leaves a continuous stitch up the edge of the fabnc that makes sewing up easier. Because the madę stitch lies to the left of the onginal strtch. at the beginning of a knit now you knit one stitch. then make the increase. but at the end of a knit row you work the increase into the third stitch from the end. The increase stitch lies between the second and third stitches at each end (see page 28 -9 for morę Information on fuli fashioning).

On a purł row you work in exactly the same way; the bar will be in the correct position two stitches from either end.

On a knit row knit into the front of the stitch as usual. do not slip the stitch off the left-hand needle but knit into it agam through the back of the loop. Then slip the onginal stitch off the left-hand needle.
