As the first increment of a civic building program, the Aurora Municipal Justice Center comprises a new courthouse, a new detention center, and an expanded police headquarters facility. The organizing axis runs from west to east, culminating in a large, domed rotunda which is the anchor of the complex.

In concert with local building practices, the design incorporates an architectural and structural precast system. The precast dome is the first of its kind constructed in the United States.

Departing from traditional court design, the courtroom configurations allow juries to face the witnesses. The design of one courtroom accommodates the remote arraignment of defendants and includes two high-security holding cells that are directly accessible from the detention center. Responding to the city’s projected judicial requirements through the year 2010, the courthouse program focuses on flexibility for the futurę by planning for increases in the number of courtrooms and judges’ chambers within the building envelope.
