c.    ‘Gable’ head-dress, late 15th century.

This is cut like the half-circle cloth veil (Fig 1), but wired and stiffened to form a rigid structure. It is pinned in place over a fillet and a smali kerchief or linen cap, and could be lined.

d.    Pattern. Scalę up and cut the pattern, plus any lining. Bend a length of 2 mm copper wire to the T-shape shown by the heavy linę, and stitch it inside the head-dress. Fold the straight front edge of the head-dress under, along the broken linę. Stitch it, enclosing two panels (shaded) of heavy buckram or cardboard, 6 cm by 13 cm. Hem the curved back edge, if the head-dress is unlined. Bend the wire to form the ‘gable’ shape at the front and the ridge over the crown. The cloth will fali in pleats at the back.
