3. Overkirtle for pregnancy,

15th century

The overkirtle (Overkirtles, Fig 2) could be modified for the late stages of pregnancy by opening up both side seams for lacing. The inner kirtle might be front-laced, so any gap in it would be covered.

4. Baby's shirt - pattern

Shirts for very young babies are square-cut like all linens. With its open Front, it is simplest to cut the body in one piece, as shown. Plan the body to reach down to the thighs, and wide enough to overlap round the chest. This example is 30 cm long by 60 cm wide round the chest. Stitch the shoulders to make the body, make up the sleeves, and set them into the armhole slits (Methods, Fig 7). Underarm gussets may not be necessary if the sleeves are madę wide.

5. Baby's 'bed'

This baby is dressed in a shirt (Fig 4), coif and tail-clout, before being wrapped in the 'bed', a large piece of plain linen. The bed would be secured by a band wound from shoulders to feet and back again, its ends tied or pinned.
