CYLINDER HEAD/VALVE

CAM CHAIN INSPECTION

Measure the height of the cam chain tensioner projection as shown. Replace the cam chain with a new one if the projection exceeds 7.0 mm (0.28 in).

To replace the cam chain, drain the oil from the engine and remove the following parts:

FRONT CYLINDER HEAD	REAR CYLINDER HEAD
Left crankcase cover Front camshaft Flywheel	Right crankcase cover Rear camshaft Primary drive gear

CAMSHAFT REM0VAL

Remove the cylinder head cover (page 9-3).

Remove the timing hole cap and crankshaft hole cap from the left crankcase cover.

Align the "FT" mark (rear: "RT" marki on the flywheel with the notch on the left crankcase cover by turning the crankshaft counterclockwise. Make surę the piston is at TDC (TOP DEAD CENTER) on the compression stroke.

If the piston is not at TDC, tum the crankshaft 360° counterclockwise, and re-align the mark with the notch.

Remove the camshaft holder mounting bolts and nut, oil pas-sage and camshaft holders.
