STARCHING

Snowflakes reąuire a “stiffening” process to achieve the desired effect. Read the following instructions before beginning.

Materials: Stiffening solution 8" x 12" heavy cardboard. scotch tape, tracing paper, waterproof marking pen, plastic wrap, riet-proof pins, hot glue gun and glue sticks. and translucerit nylon thread.

Prepare stiffening solution by methods:

Make 3 blocking patterns^fór elffch Snowflake to be starched by laying tęadhg paper ov§r-The diagram and drawing lines ujjtffa waterproof marking-pen. Fold 2 of the pattern^irThalf along dot ed linę. Cut tFh-eę 4" x 8* pieces,oł fieavy cardboard. Tepe cardboard together alpng 8" sides to form a triartgular tubę. Lay the flai ilocking pattern on an ironing board or blocking board, lay the two folded blocking patterns over the triangular tubę, and cover all patterns With plastic wrap.

Immerse Snowflakes in stifferjing solution and sąueeze to remove excess. Place over blbcking patterns and pin in place, making surę curved p<rts are smooth, straight parts are straight, and symmetrica! components within the Snowflake are equal. Allow to dry completely.

After Snowflakes are dry, glue each folded piece to either side of the fiat Snowflake (Fig. 1). Allow to dry.

Make loop hangers, using translucent nylon thread.

GAUGE

Although the instructions in this leaflet have been written for bedspread weight cotton (size 10), you may wish to substitute a finer or even a slightly heavier weight thread. Gauge doesn’t really matter that much; your Snowflakes can certainly be a little smaller, or bigger, without changing the overall effect.

THREAD

The photographed Snowflakes were madę using bedspread weight cotton thread. No gauge is given. The size of the Snowflakes will vary slightly depending on the thread you use. Any of the brands listed below may be used with good results:
