lf we were to provide the definition of cultural untranslatability, we would define it to be the impossibility of translation due to cultural barriers. We actually do not translate only a language, but also its culture. It transpires when sociocultural dissimilarities are so vast that the difference cannot simply be linguistically bridged. Accordingly, a well-educated translator or an interpreter ought to have an excellent command of the target language, not to mention that he or she should also know manners and customs of native speakers who write or speak that language. The purpose of translation, however, is the same, to make foreign customs and concepts comprehensible to the target group.

J.C.Catford, who was an esteemed translation scholar, raised the issue of untranslatability in 1965. According to him, linguistic untranslatability is the result of differences in the source and the target language. With regard to the cultural untranslatability, he claims that cultural untranslatability stems from the lack of pivotal situational features in the target language.
