The division of sentences

Sentences can be divided on the basis of:

-    Their function into: statements, ąuestions, exclamations, commands. requests, etc.

-    Tliis distinction is often based on the social contexc Can you pass me the salt? Canyou swim?

-    Their stnicture into sinipie sentences (one clause) and com|)ound or complex ones (two clanses or morę)

Sentences from discourse.

A clause forms a sentence: 1 hurried borne (a sentence=a clause), or part of it, e.g.....because

Superordinate clause    subordinate clause

!!!! In English tlie sentence is complex if it contains at least two different verb forms which do not consutute one predicator, e.g. I want to go home (complex)

A subordinate clause occurs witli (a) or without (b) the subject, witłi (a) tlie verb in finite, or (b) non-finite form:

a)    When I was Crossing the Street. I saw an accident.

b)    Crossing tlie Street, I saw an accident

-    COMPOUND SENTENCE (clauses of equal rank)

We will go home or we will see a movie.
