campus of the University of Economics in Katowice. Flex-Simposium is one of three events of this kind in the world, the others being held in the USA and Germany. How-ever, Roland is the only country where it is both academic in naturę and an extremely excit-ing event.
This year, FlexSimposium was opened by Prof. Wojciech Dyduch, Vice-Rector for Education and International Cooperation, and Prof. Krystyna lędralska, Dean of the Faculty of Management. It was chaired by Dr Krzysztof Niestrój. As usual, FlexiSimposium comprised two modules: one consisting of lectures and one composed of workshops. The Polish and for-eign visiting speakers delivered their lectures in the CNTI audi-torium. Dr Witold Cempel from the Uniuersity of Science and Technology in Kraków gave a speech about the relation-ships between simulation and
a state-of-the art tool for proc-ess improvement and optimisation. The latest version of the software offers the possibility of visual model verification by means of Oculus Rift, a visuat reality headset. It’s fair to say that FlexSim ushers in a new era in striving for operationat excel!ence. In Poland, it is al-ready used by Fiat, Beiersdorf, Team Technik and Solaris. On 24 November 2015, enthusiasts of simulation modelling in manufactu-ring and logistics met at our university. The event was co-organised by the University of Economics in Katowice, Cempel Consulting from Kraków and Poznań University of Technology.
FlexSimposium has been or-ganised annuatly in Potand for the last three years. It brings together scientists, architects of the manufacturing and logistics Systems, as well as students interested in the simulation technology. Three years ago the conference was hosted by the Universityof Science and Technology in Kraków, last year - by Wroctaw University of Technology, and this year it took place at the
lean and six sigma. He pointed out that in practice changes are seldom tested before being implemented even though Computer simulation enables such testing today. Professor Greenwood noted that while product testing is common in the industry sector, proc-ess testing still remains a rare practice. which leads to the condusion that the dissemina-tion of the simulation technology in Poland is bound to improve our companies' com-petitiveness. Dirk-Jan Moens from the Netherlands madę a presentation on Floworks to exemplify the transition between discrete and continuous processes. DJ Moens showed the application of the simulation experiments in, inter alia, the petrochemical and brewing industries. Another interesting lecture was delivered by Prof. Paweł Pawlewski from Poznań University of Technology, who outlined the applications of the agent-based approach in logistics. Dawid Dąbal, who represented the Uniuersity of Science and Technology in Kraków, discussed the manufacturing piocess testing, pro-viding examples from selected companies in the automotive industry.
Two workshops, one for the beginners and one for the ad-vanced users, attracted a great number of participants, who could try their hand at simulation modelling by means of FlexSim GP V7 and Floworks. FlexSim GP V7 is new genera-tion software that simulates and optimises discrete and continuous processes. The user has access to a library of 3D objects to build three-dimen-sional models of the manufacturing and logistics processes, which can be used to perform simulation experiments aimed at minimising costs, maxim-ising productivity, etc. The optimisation model OptQest supports the user in defin-ing and running multi-criteria optimisation.
