Na rysunku 1 w sposób uproszczony przedstawiono struktury strategii innowacji w dużej firmie produkcyjnej, która jednocześnie prowadzi działalność badawczo-rozwojową. Zgodnie z podejściem projektowym przyjęto, że strategia innowacji to zbiór projektów, których tematyka wynika z ogólnych strategicznych założeń dla okresu od kilku do kilkunastu lat. Wśród projektów wyróżniono portfel projektów badawczo-rozwojowych oraz portfel projektów, których przedmiotem jest działalność wdrożeniowa kończąca się w sferze produkcji. Ze schematu wynika, że struktura portfelowa pozwala na wybór liczby i zakresu poszczególnych projektów oraz na płynne przechodzenie od projektów badawczych do projektów wdrożeniowych. Niekiedy jest celowe połączenie obu rodzajów projektów w jeden projekt strategiczny, który ma pozwolić na szybkie wprowadzenie określonego produktu lub platformy produktowej na rynek. Na schemacie wskazano też na występowanie związków strategii innowacji z innymi strategiami funkcjonalnymi (strategią inwestycji, finansów, marketingu, rozwoju kapitału ludzkiego), co warunkuje pomyślną realizacji strategii innowacji. Przyjęcie struktury projektowej dla strategii innowacji ułatwia firmie kształtowanie zespołów realizujących poszczególne projekty oraz pozwala na
