Innertkirchen power station

The Innertkirchen power station is the first underground installation of this type in Switzerland. The main dimensions of the rock-cavem are: length 100 m, maximum height 26 m and width 19.5 m. The vertical rock covering is 50 m. The so-called Innertkirchen-granite is a rock which is older than the central Aar granite. It became strongly compressed and jointed during the folding of the Alps. But owing to the cons-truction of an exploration galiery it was possible to locate the power station within a suitable massif. In order to disturb the rock as little as possible, the direction of the axis of the cavem was placed at right angles to the nonmal strike of the cleavage. The crown was excavated first and protcctcd by a concrete vault 40 cm thick. Since the arch operation began, the defor-mation at sevcral points on the ceiling of the power station chamber has becn kcpt under obscrvation. The position of a point in the apex of the vault is being chscked particularly in relation to the foundation and a linę laid out along the mountain-sidc outside the power-station chamber. It has been noticed that some movement, as a function of temperaturę variations, is taking place.

The hydroelectric power plant at Innertkirchen, which was built in the war years 1940-42, utilizes the drop of the river Aar between Handeck and Innertkirchen with a gross head of 672 metres. The civil engineering works include the 10 km long head race tunnel between the intake and the surge tank, the steel-lined pressure shaft, the underground power station with a valve chamber and the taił race tunnel. The power station is eąuipped with 5 generating sets with vertical shafts, each consisting of an impulse (Pelton) turbinę of 65,000 kVA and a generator of 52,000 kVA and 135,000 volts, placed above the turbinę.

The voltage of the power produced is stepped up to 150,000 V and conducted to the Innertkirchen switching station by means of oil-insulated cables, from where it is carried ovcr 3 double Circuit transmission lines to the various distributing companies. The power plant Innertkirchen at present utilizes the run-off waters of the Grimsel, Gelmcr and Gauli catchment areas and, sińce 1954, also of the Gadmen valley, totalling about 500 million m3 which is equivalent to a minimum annual output of 784 million kWh. After the complete exploitation of the water power available in the Oberhasli, the Kraftwerke Oberhasli (KWO) will have a total annual output of 1300 millions kWh, about half of it available during the winter.

On the return journey, after driving along a hill road parallel to the gorge of the Aar, Conference Members will arrive at Meiringen. Then they will go to Intcrlaken, along the shores of the Brienzersee.

Centrale d' Innertkirchen

La centrale dTnnertkirchen est la premiere centrale souterraine de ce genre construite en Suisse. Ses dimensions principales sont les suivantes: longueur 100 m; hauteur maximum 26 m, largeur 19,5 m. Le recouvrement rocheux a une epaisseur de 50 m. Le granit denomme «granit dTnnertkirchen» est une roche metamorphique, plus ancienne que le granit central de l’Aar. Lors de la formation du plissement alpin, ce granit fut fortement comprime et se stratifia. Cependant il a ete possible, a 1’aide d’une galerie de reconnaissance, de determiner, au coeur du massif, un emplacement convenant a la construction d’une telle centrale. Afin d’eviter le plus possible d’ebranler le rocher, l’axe de la caveme a ete oriente perpendiculairement a la direction des couches. La calotte a ete excavee tout d’abord, puis protegec au moyen d’une voutc de beton dc 40 cm d’epaisseur. Des l’ouverture du chantier, plusieurs reperes, places dans la voute de la centrale, ont ete soumis a des observations regulieres. Les mouvcments du repere place k la cle dc la voGtc ont ete mesures par rapport aux fondations et k une ligne menee le long du flanc de la montagne, k l’exte-rieur de la chambre des vannes. Un leger mouvement, variant avec les changements de temperaturę, a ćte cnregistre.

Les installations hydro-electriques dTnnertkirchen ont ete construites entre 1940 et 1942; elles utilisent la chute naturelle de 1’Aar entre Handeck et Innertkirchen, avec une hauteur de chute de 672 metres. Les travaux de genie civil comprennent une galerie d’amenee de 10 km de longueur entre la prise et la chambre d’equilibre, la conduite forcee, la centrale avec chambre des vannes et galerie de fuite. La centrale est equipee de 5 groupes a axe verticaux, comprenant chacun une turbinę Pelton d’une capacite de 65000 kVA et un altemateur de 52000 kVA et 13000 Volts.

Le courant produit est transforme a 150000 Volts et conduit au poste de couplage dTnnertkirchen au moyen de cables isoles a 1’huile; de la, au moyen de 3 lignes a haute tension et a double Circuit, le courant est cnvoye aux diflerentes societes distributrices. Les installations electriques dTnnertkirchen utilisent actuellement l’eau des bassins versants du Grimsel, dc Gelmcr et dc Gauli; a partir dc 1954 elles utiliscront egale-ment les eaux de la vallee de Gadmen, cłest-a-dire, au total, 500 millions de m3 environ, ce qui equivaut a une energie minimum annuelle de 784 millions de kWh. Lorsque sera rćalisee l’exploitation complete, les Forces Motrices dc TOberhasli (KWO) atteindront une production annuelle totale de 1300 millions de kWh, dont la moitie environ sera produite en hiver.

Au retour, apres avoir franchi un col peu eleve entre Innertkirchen et Meiringen, les visiteurs arriveront au Iac de Brienz et enfirt k Interlaken.
