Discourse analysis -understanding the mechanisms of communication in the world of business, politics, media and advertising
Content: The main aim of the seminar is to provide students with the tools for understanding and analyzing texts from the world of business, politics, media and advertising. The course will present different linguistic as well as psycho-sociological issues in the study of communication to account for the interplay between language, meaning and context. Moreover, the seminar will be devoted to the description and analysis of the mechanisms underlying communication strategies. The topics will include:
1. Different genres of discourse:
• Business discourse
• Political discourse
• Media discourse
• Advertising discourse
2. Mechanisms of linguistic persuasion and manipulation
3. Tools for analysing discourse (metaphor, metonymy)
4. Selected issues in cross-cultural communication
Format: The students will be asked to read the assigned texts and participate in the discussions at the seminar. At the end of the first semester the students will be asked to write a research paper (about 10 pages) related to the topics discussed at the seminar. Additionally, the students will be asked to prepare short orał presentations (about 30 minutes) and delived them in class.
In the first year the seminar will be mostly devoted to reading and discussing the relevant literaturę. At the end of the first semester the students will choose the topics of their MA theses. At the end of the second semester they will be expected to submit the first chapter of these thesis.
