GRAM
Steering
Subject: Steering Linkage Improvements
Improvements to the steering arrangement have been made which allow grease to be added to the
jackshaft support housing. Any truck built prior to the new arrangement can be altered by using the
instructions outlined in this Gram. When installing the bushings refer to Figure #1. For drilling
information of the shaft weldment (sprocket) refer to Figure #2.
The following parts are used when installing the new arrangement (refer to Figure #1):
Item No. Qty. Part Name New P/N Former P/N
1 1 Fitting Lube 16001
2 1 Bushing 626687 628070
3 1 Bushing 628070
4 1 Shaft Weldment 304423
Alteration Instructions:
1. Warning: Unplug the battery. Remove the battery from the truck or place a protective cover
over it to prevent accidental shorting of the terminals. Using blocks elevate the rear of truck to
just suspend rear steer wheel.
2. Position hood in full up position.
3. To gain better access to the bushings when removing and installing them, the hydraulic motor
should be removed.
4. Loosen the chain tensioner and remove the steering chain.
5. Remove the jackshaft weldment, a spreader may be necessary to help remove the weldment.
6. Remove the shaft weldment (sprocket). Retain all shims and thrust washers for reinstalla-
tion. To obtain adequate bushing life, a smooth shaft surface finish is essential. Examine
the shaft very carefully. If the shaft can be polished with fine emery or crocus cloth to
remove any burrs, nicks or roughness, then the original

ring the obligation to make such changes in equipment previously manufactured.

shaft can be drilled per Figure #2 and reinstalled in the truck. If the shaft cannot be polished,
then a new shaft weldment must be installed.
7. Using a bushing driver, remove both bushings. The top bushing can be driven down against the
bottom bushing forcing both out of the bottom of the support housing.
8. Using a bushing driver, install the new bushings.
Caution: The longer bushing must be installed on top of the support housing and must be
installed with the split on the bushing away from the cut out in the support housing.
9. Reinstall the shaft weldment, chain and the jackshaft weldment. A small amount of grease
should be applied to the bushing surface before the shaft weldment is installed. Do not hammer
the jackshaft weldment onto the shaft weldment. Use a spreader if necessary. Tighten the pinch
bolt that secures the jackshaft weldment to the shaft weldment to 160 ft. lbs. torque. Install the
lube fitting into the shaft weldment.
10. Turn the steering wheel for a full right hand turn and then a full left hand turn. The steering
trunnion support should be parallel in each turn with the battery compartment rear plate. Also
ensure that there is no interference between cylinder rod and jackshaft support in a full left hand
turn. If a small amount of adjustment is necessary to obtain the full 90 degree turn in both
directions or to eliminate cylinder rod interference, adjust the rod end by turning the cylinder
rod in our out as required. If a larger amount of adjustment is necessary, move the steer chain
one link before the rod is adjusted.
11. If it was necessary to adjust the rod end, then adhesive part #226414 (Loctite No. 271) should
be applied to the rod ends threads (follow adhesive manufacturers application instructions).
Tighten the jam nut to 100 ft. lbs. torque. Adjust the chain tensioner and tighten the bolts to
170 ft. lbs. torque. Apply multipurpose grease into the support housing through the lube fitting
#16001. Install the hydraulic motor.
12. After the adjustments are made, check the light sequence, adjust per Service Manual, if neces-
sary.
Interchangeability:
Parts are directly interchangeable except, with the new arrangement, top bushing P/N 626687
must be used.
