STORYTELLING

Observe a lesson in which the teacher tells or reads a story to children and answer the following questions.

1. Briefly describe the story used during the lesson.

2. Was the story appropriate for the group of learners observed? Take into account the criteria listed below:

■    level of language (vocabulary, structures, functions)

■    features such as rhyme, rhythm, intonation, onomatopoeia that children will enjoy imitating

■    the topie

■    visuals (e.g. attractive illustrations of appropriate size)

■    authenticity and information about the target language culture

■    whether the story encourages participation (e.g. repetition, prediction, etc.)

■    whether the story promotes positive attitudes and values

3. What storytelling techniques did the teacher use during the lesson at the pre-, while- and post-listening stage? Complete the table below and describe each technique briefly.
