Short braies 4

4. Short braies

a.    Basic shape, 1350-1500. A loosely fitting garment reaching to the waist. It is held up by a narrow drawstring in a waist casing, which emerges through an eyelet at CF.

b.    Fitted braies, 1400-1500. A morę shaped version for wear under joined hose. This has two eyelets at the front, 5 to 10 cm apart. The drawstring crosses inside the casing between the eyelets, see c.

c.    The arrows show the threading of the drawstring.

5. Patterns for Fig 4

The patterns are based on the wearer's Seat and Body rise measurements, and a further measurement round one thigh. a. Planning a quarter garment

The heavy outline shows loose braies. The width must allow for the leg cut-out, here 30 cm deep and half the Thigh measurement. Back and Front are identical.

The finer outline shows a closer-fitting form. The solid lines show the Back, and the broken lines the Front. The deep shaping of the leg cut-out allows the body to be only slightly wider than Seat measurement.

b. Complete pattern for both shapes

Braies can be out in one piece, or with Back and Front joined by a seam at the crotch. To make them up, sew the side seams, then hem the leg holes. Work the eyelet(s) through single fabric before turning down the top edge and hemming it to form the drawstring casing.
