INTRODUCTION TO THE DISCUSSION

I. Presentation and review of the detailed geomorphological maps performed by different authors in different countries (table).

II. The detailed geomorphological maps hitherto performed are incomparable because of both the scope of content and the means of showing their content.

III. The problem, whether — for the scientdfic weal and for the better develop-ment of geomorphology — the geomorphological maps performed in differing regions ought to be comparable i.e. to be constructed according to similar principles and a similar (uniform) legend (like the geological maps) or not?

IV. In case of an affirmative answer we ought to aim at the establishment of the conception and the principles of construction of the detailed geomorphological map.

It reąuires the solution of the following problems:

1. The problem of the map’s scalę —

the map’s content depends on the scalę (the minor the scalę the greater the number of forms, especially the elements of forms),

the method depends on the scalę (the geomorphological map results from the geomorphological mapping), scales being used: I : 5,000, 1 :10,000, 1 : 25,000, 1 : 50,000, 1 :100,000, 1 : 200,000.

2. The problem of the aim of the detailed geomorphological map. What do we expect and what do we want to show

a) the location of forms of a defined appearance? of defined morphometric features?

of defined origin?

to recognize the distribution of landforms;

b) both the distribution and the mutual relation of forms whose origin and age has been defined to recognize the geomorphological development of the area represented?

Which of these conceptions will be morę favourable for the development of science and of practice?

3. The problem of the scope of the geomorphological map’s content.

Ali of the maps presented were called geomorphological maps yet the scope of their content is different.

Three maps show only morphographic and morphometric data, two maps show only morphogenetic data, two maps show morphogenetic and morphochronolcgical data without the morphometric and morphografic ones, two maps show morphographic, morphogenetic and morphochronological data without the morphometric ones, two maps show all of the data required.
